7 Layer Jell-O

7 Layer Jell-O

Grandma DeBie would make this occasionally when we were kids.  I was always excited when I saw her pull it out of the refrigerator.  I had no idea how much time it took her to make it, but I knew I loved eating this Jell-O layer by wonderful layer.

Patience is a virtue with this recipe.  It takes only 15 minutes to make, but spread out over an entire day.  Try making it and I bet your kids will feel as special as I did.

Ingredients:

  • 7 (3 oz) packages of assorted flavored Jell-O mix. Or if you can’t find the 3oz, you can get 4 (6oz) packages and divide them into 3oz portions.
  • 4 ½ cups boiling water, divided
  • 4 ½ cups cold water, divided
  • 1 (12 oz) can evaporated milk

Directions:

Spray a 9x13 dish with cooking spray.

Decide the order you want to create your flavor layers.  In my video I end with lemon on top, which isn’t my favorite.  Next time I will end with Strawberry or Raspberry as the top layer.

Layer 1: Dissolve one package of gelatin in 3/4 cup boiling water. Stir in 3/4 cup cold water.  Gently pour into 9x13 pan.  Refrigerate for 45 min – 1 hour until fully set.

Once the first layer is in the refrigerator, mix the next 2 layers.  This will allow them to slightly cool before pouring them onto the previous layer of Jell-O, which will help to prevent the layer below from dissolving.  (NOTE: My video shows I did not do this between the first and second layers and the first layer dissolved slightly in certain areas and did not create the clean layers that I was attempting to make.

Layer 2: Dissolve the second package of gelatin in 1/2 cup boiling water. Stir in 1/2 cup cold water and 1/2 cup evaporated milk.

Layer 3: Dissolve one package of gelatin in 3/4 cup boiling water. Stir in 3/4 cup cold water.

Once the first layer is set, gently pour the second layer over the first.  Refrigerate until almost set, about 45 min. Go on to mix layer 4, so it can start cooling.

Layer 4: Dissolve the second package of gelatin in 1/2 cup boiling water. Stir in 1/2 cup cold water and 1/2 cup evaporated milk.

Once the second layer is set, gently pour the third layer over the previous.  Refrigerate until almost set, about 45 min. Go on to mix layer 5, so it can start cooling.

Layer 5: Dissolve one package of gelatin in 3/4 cup boiling water.  Stir in 3/4 cup cold water.

Once the third layer is set, gently pour the fourth layer over the previous.  Refrigerate until almost set, about 45 min. Go on to mix layer 6, so it can start cooling.

Layer 6: Dissolve the second package of gelatin in 1/2 cup boiling water.  Stir in 1/2 cup cold water and 1/2 cup evaporated milk.

Once the fourth layer is set, gently pour the fifth layer over the previous.  Refrigerate until almost set, about 45 min. Go on to mix layer 7, so it can start cooling.

Layer 7: Dissolve one package of gelatin in 3/4 cup boiling water.  Stir in 3/4 cup cold water.

Once the fifth layer is set, gently pour the sixth layer over the previous.  Refrigerate until almost set, about 45 min.

Once the sixth layer is set, gently pour the seventh layer over the previous. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Enjoy!
